Photographs of Central Asia

These photos come from a variety of sources including old Russian postcards as well as from the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg. They depict scenes of nomadic and urban life on the steppes of Central Asia. Click to see more.

I took these photographs in Afghanistan in the mid 1970s through the early 1980s, well before the calamitous events of the last 23 years transpired. This photo essay provides views of the ordinary people doing ordinary things which seem, at this date, quite extraordinary. Click to see more.
