Itinerant Troupe of Comedians - Tibet (1921-22)

A photo taken by Alexandra David-Neel, circa 1921-22, an extraordinary woman with unique experiences as a foreigner living in Tibet for an extended period of time. Invited for the first time to Tibet by the 13th Dalai Lama whom she met in Sikkim, she studied Buddhism and became a serious practitioner of the faith.

Depicted is a professional comedy troupe, entertainers at the Monlam Festival. Probably an itinerant troupe, such entertainers travelled throughout the country enacting scenes from the Tibetan mythology and history. Adding a comic twist to the tales was greatly appreciated by the Tibetans who are known to enjoy a good laugh.
