The Flight of the 14th Dalai Lama from Tibet

An unusual photograph depicting the 14th Dalai Lama walking through the mountains in his flight from Tibet in 1959. Seen on the left, wearing his distinctive spectacles, he is joined by his brother and countless followers, his bodyguards consisting of Khampas who comprise the warrior class in Tibet.

The flight of the Dalai Lama has been chronicled and undoubtedly it was an arduous journey but here he seems relaxed, calmly walking on a rather wide mountain path. The angst of the journey is more evident on the face of his brother next to him.

His flight was precipitated by the imminent arrival of the Chinese Army in Lhasa and his inevitable incarceration by the Communist government.
