Malang in Kabul
The white turban signifies this man has been to Mecca for the holy pilgrimage known a the Haj. He is a Pashtun, a tribe that much later in time comprised the demographics of the despised Taliban regime. Possibly a malang, a holy man of the Islamic faith (not to be confused with a mullah or preacher), malangs are synonymous with their Hindu equivalent known as sadhus, who partake in inebriants in order to connect with their 'god', in this case, Allah.
