"Village Life - Opium Smokers"

The scourge of present day Asia, opium was and still is a popular pastime among some people. Its debilitating effects are very apparent here, as the three men in the background are all 'nodding out', one atop the other in a classic posture of sedated repose.

In the foreground, the man who prepares the pipes for the paying patrons, holds the pipe for a what appears to be a younger man of the working class. Another man rests, using his legs as a cushion. The younger man smoking is of modest means; he is barefoot and his dress is that of a laborer.
