These caravans crisscrossed the steppes of Asia from throughout recorded time and probably before. Wherever there may have been a demand for products that locals did not have which were available elsewhere, traders were willing to brave the perils of the journey.
Danger took many forms, including the elements as well as natural predators, be it in the form of wild beast or human plunderers who took both the traders' good and, on occasion, the traders themselves to be sold as slaves.
