Cotton Textile Fragment, block print w/resist & mordant dye, Balotra(?), Rajasthan (Bagru or Sanganer?),
late 18th/early 19th century, 10" x 7" (exclusive of the mount, textile only)

The dye saturation an design both suggest the early date for this small fragment of cloth that was once fashioned into a manuscript cover. The vertical bands of red exhibiting two distinct shade is an aesthetic one might associate with earlier textile art from India.

The simple flowers in the other vertical band, too, appear to be reminsicent of the Moghil aestehtic, as the overall composition retains the char of art from the provincial outposts where they were made.
