Embroidery (fragment), Gujarat (West India), early 20th Century, 1' 8" x 1' 6" (exclusive of the mount)

A whimsically designed embroidery fragment depicting riders on multi colored elephants with plant like forms or floral sprays above. The dyes of the floss silk embroidery, a featured material employed by some groups in Rajastan and Gujarat, all derived from natural dyes and well saturated, a pleasing contrast to the burnt orange ground cloth.

The textile is sewn onto a linen ground cloth which has been stretched over a wooden frame, ready to hang on a wall.
