Baluch Kilim, SE Persia, 19th C., 4’11” x 9'8”
An extraordinary weaving that explores a depth of field created through the use of color (the abrash of the red ground color) to create a three dimensional perspective within the context of two dimensional textile art. I have never seen an analogous example in either the literature or in private collections.
The manner in which the abrash of the red ground works in this weaving is extraordinary, providing an interesting back drop to the repeating cross like designs. A truly monumental work of textile art.
The condition is ok, there are a couple small re-weaves, but nothing obtrusive or very visible. All the colors are derived from natural dyes.
