A Married Woman
This photo is labelled by the museum as depicting a married Karakalpak woman. She is seen wearing prominent chest plate, not unlike those seen among the Turkmen women. The embroidered sleeves are classic Karkalpak work, executed in a cross stitch technique. Her garments consist of silk ikat from neighboring Uzbek tribes. Her dark skin, and coarse features suggest she is not a member of the ruling aristocracy of her tribe, or her clan is not one of the more powerful and/or influential constituents of the tribe.
