Tekke(?) Turkmen Woman, Caspian Region of Turkmenistan

Taken in the Caspian region of Turkmenistan, the image offered here is probably that of a Tekke Turkmen woman of modest means. Her simple clothing and sparse jewelry suggests her relatively simple background, as does her darker skin and relatively coarse features. The method of wrapping her hair in a scarf, probably composed of silk is one still practiced today by the Tekke women of Ashgabat. Note the cylindrical amulet hanging below her jewelery. Inside this cylinder one can probably find printed verses of the Koran or other talismans.
